What is a Charter School?

A charter school is a public school that operates under an agreement (or charter) with the Texas Education Agency (TEA) or other governing entities, providing families with a school choice option that delivers enhanced educational opportunities often unavailable in traditional public schools. Open to all students, charter schools do not charge tuition, have no religious affiliation, and must comply with the same state and federal testing, financial, anti-discrimination, health, and safety regulations as traditional public schools. Charter schools often emphasize higher levels of parent, student, and community involvement, fostering innovation and increased student achievement.
